50 years in Business.

Owned since 1988 by Jeff and Mary Beth Peiffer, Akins Auto was originally established by brothers Millard and Shorty Akins in 1970.

“It was first a filling station called Akin Gulf. In 1983, the business was moved to its present location,” said Mary Beth Peiffer. “Jeff started working for Akins Auto in 1976. When we bought the business, we decided to keep the name as it was.”

No one wants their vehicle to need repairs, but when it happens, it’s nice to know that good quality repairs for fair prices can be found close to home at Akins Auto, located at 1309 N. Washington St. in Cleveland.

Because of her husband’s humble, low-key demeanor, Mary Beth was the more comfortable of the two to talk about the secret of their success.

“Really I think the reason that Jeff is so successful is that he feels a sense of personal obligation to get things right for his customers. Jeff is an original good guy. He helps a lot of people,” she said.

Mary Beth said that sense of integrity applies to every transaction at Akins Auto.

“Our customers are always provided a price estimate for the work before it is performed. We perform high quality repairs at a fair and just price,” she said. “Jeff makes sure we use high quality merchandise from reputable firms and he employs four ASE-certified mechanics and a service writer who know what they are doing.”

Though they live in Montgomery County, Mary Beth said they feel a responsibility to the community in which they own a business.

“We know that the money needs to stay in the community. Jeff tries to buy all his parts locally first. He gives the local parts stores and auto dealers the first option. That’s not to say we don’t get parts elsewhere, but we try locally first. Sometimes you just can’t get them,” she said.

Akins Auto is a full-service automotive repair shop for foreign and domestic vehicles. Everything from minor maintenance to major engine overhauls can be performed by the shop’s skilled mechanics. The exceptions are paint and body work, headliners and bedliners.

“Your automobile is one of your most valued possessions. If you are particular about your auto, you should be particular about your mechanic,” said Mary Beth.

Akin Auto is a complete auto service center specializing in the following; heating and air conditioning, brake systems, computerized engine controls, belts and hoses, fuel injection systems, electrical and charging systems, transmission repair, drive train repair, suspension, alignments and tire service, bearings, seals, and gaskets installed, cooling systems, oil change and lube jobs, engine overhauls, emissions control systems and extended vehicle warranties to customers in southeast Texas.
